On kindness and memories: the experience of making Flanor’s eighth lustrum book

These past few months have been a whirlwind. As many Flanorians already know, I have been busy working on my master’s thesis (please don’t ask me about it). Besides that, however, I have also been working behind the scenes on Flanor’s newest lustrum book!

Last March, board Ghattas approached me to ask whether I’d be willing to work on the lustrum book, because I already have experience making several magazines (among which is, of course, our lovely Literatief) and several almanacs. While I knew I would not have a lot of time, I agreed to become the committee’s chair. I figured I would be able to find a group of people who would be able to create a wonderful ode to the past five years of Flanor. And find those people I did! When we started out last June, I was immediately joined by Wiegert, Stijn, and Chrystel, all of whom are incredibly hard workers and were very passionate about the project. In this beginning phase, we did a lot of talking and a lot of brainstorming. I had meetings with several people who had a hand in making past lustrum books of Flanor and, due to their help, I was able to know what was expected and draft up a plan for the year ahead of us. When September came around, I was lucky to find two new faces who wanted to join our crew: Luke and Carolien. They gave us the helping hands we needed in order to really get started on the book.

Ever since then, my committee members have been able to really give shape to our book, while I have been busy collecting the funds to make it a reality. Currently, we are designing the inside of the book: putting all of our written pieces into a nice format, which will be sent off to the printers at the end of this month. This is the point where I would love to remind you, dear reader, to order your own copy of the book if you have not done so yet! If all goes according to plan, they will be distributed at the end of the lustrumweek. This is also the moment where we will be revealing the theme of the book, which will remain a mystery for now…

From the start of this project, it has been important to us to capture a fragment of the current Flanor spirit. I have seen firsthand how this community has rallied together the most passionate and creative people. When I’m with Flanorians, I am able to just be myself to the fullest extent and to let go a bit of the daily stresses that come with being a working student. I know many of you feel the same. This is why I am so thankful to be creating our lustrum book this year. While it has certainly been a lot of work, it is also an ode to the kindness all of you have directed my way. I hope you feel this reflected back at you, once you open our book’s pages.
