On September 8th, Yael van der Wouden is coming to Flanor for an interview. Yael van der Wouden is an author and a teacher of creative writing and storytelling. She debuted in 2024 with her novel The Safekeep. The Safekeep won the Women's Prize 2025, and was on the shortlist for the Booker Prize 2024. It has by now been sold in over 30 languages worldwide. In her work, Yael likes to explore themes like writing history and identity. In 2018, she wrote the essay "On (Not) Reading Anne Frank," about growing up Jewish in the Netherlands, which was mentioned in the list of Best American Essays. She was also part of founding the intersectional Dutch publisher Uitgeverij Chaos, which also translated The Safekeep into Dutch. Yael is currently working on her second novel about control, separation, and the closure of the Zuiderzee.
